In October Fenneke and I went to the northern part of The Netherlands together with her family. During this weekend we did a couple of hikes and went ice skating.

On Friday the 19th of October Fenneke and I drove up north towards Oudemirdum, a small town in the province of Friesland where we were going to spend the weekend. However before going directly to Oudemirdum we made a stop in National Park Drents-Friese Wold to go hiking. We had never been there and looked forward to exploring this national park. We parked our car in a small and very nice town called Diever from where we started our hike. The weather was beautiful and quite warm for this time of year: around 20 degrees Celsius. The national park is a mixture of forest, heath land, shifting sands and river valley grasslands. It is to large to see it all in one day so we spent most of our time in the forest. During our hike we came across two groups of highland cows, which was great to see. We ended up hiking 15,3 km. We enjoyed ourselves a lot here and will certainly come back.

Bellow you'll find pictures and a GPS track log.

During our stay in the province of Friesland we went hiking near Oudemirdum twice. We wanted to do a geocache there, but the first time we made a mistake so we ended up at the wrong place. We contacted the cache owner who gave us a tip after which we managed to find the cache. Both hikes where in a nice forest near the place where we stayed. The first time we hiked 8,2 km, the second time it took us only 4,1 km to find the cache. Besides these two hikes we did another one to the Rijsterbos. We also drove to Stavoren, a nice small town on the edge of the IJsselmeer which is the largest lake of the Netherlands.

Bellow you'll find pictures and two GPS track logs of the hikes.

We spent last weekend at Gaasterland an area in Friesland which is a province in the northern part of the Netherlands. This area is quite close to the famous ice skating ring Thialf where lots of important ice skating matches are organized. This is the location where we saw the World Championship Distances last year, however we've never ice skated there before. We arrived at the ice rink a little after eleven exactly at the moment the ice was being maintained, so we had to wait a couple of minutes before we could start. The ice itself was of very good quality, better than what we are used to in De Uithof at The Hague. The 400 meter track was a lot wider compared to the one at De Uithof, so this was an improvement as well. We enjoyed ourselves a lot and I ended up skating 75 laps (30 kilometers). I'm slowly starting to get used to my new skates, so I look forward to next weekend. For Fenneke this was the first time she skated since the previous ice skating season, so she had to get used to it again. After a few laps she started to get the hang of it again and it went very well.
