Walter and I decided to walk somewhere between 35 and 50 kilometers during the easter holiday. We found a GPS walking trip on the Internet that lead from Krimpen a/d Lek (where we parked the car) to Barendrecht and back. This walk was going to be our longest one untill then.
We left at 14:30 from Krimpen a/d Lek where we took the ferry to the other side of the river IJssel. Once we reached the other side we walked to Kinderdijk (home of the famous windmills). Its a beautiful place to walk, as you can see here. From Kinderdijk we walked through a few other town like Alblasserdam, Ridderkerk, etc. After approximately two hours we took a 10 minute break after which we walked on to Barendrecht which we reached at 17:40. This part of the walk was 19km long. During this first part we had a lot of snow and rain, which made the walking a little bit harder.
We had dinner at Barendrecht and left there at 19:00. We decided to take some shortcuts which made the walk back 18km long. During the walk back we took two 10 minute breaks. The walk back after dinner was very hard, the first 9 or 10 km went great, but after that we both where getting more and more tired. Finally we reached the car at 22:30 after walking 37,2 kilometers. We had a moving average of 6,2 kilometers, we walked for 6:00 hours and stopped for a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes.
The lesson we learned is that we have to start walking in the morning if we want to do long walks. Doing this prevents us from having to walk late at night after dinner which is quite hard.
